Diving The Coral Atolls of Belize: Turneffe Flats Resort

Every year scuba diving enthusiasts are drawn to the diverse marine ecosystem of the warm Caribbean Seas. Today, divers from around the globe travel to Belize for the thrill of underwater scuba diving and the opportunity to discover the lush subaquatic habitats of the Turneffe Atoll. When diving through the island’s coral cays, you will journey to the depths of some of the Earth’s greatest wonders.

Turneffe Island is the largest of three coral atolls in Belize. The 14-acre secluded island lies 35 miles offshore and is home to Turneffe Flats—the area’s premier scuba diving and marine ecotourism destination. Turneffe Flats Resort specializes in diving excursions through the island’s diverse typography, where divers navigate a complex labyrinth of tunnels and caverns. Be sure to look close. For inside hidden channels of cavern walls, divers can find a variety of hard and soft corals, eagle rays, sharks, turtles, dolphins, moray eels, large triggerfish, and even the occasional whale shark.

A selection of different dive sites are available to resort guests, from the popular advanced drift dive of The Elbow to the stunning views of the coral spires and towers that form The Cathedral. At Sayonara shipwreck site, divers encounter stoplight parrotfish and swim by French and queen angelfish feeding amongst the native sponges. Perhaps one of the greatest draws of Turneffe is the world-famous Great Belize Blue Hole. This natural phenomenon is believed by researchers to be the world’s largest underwater sinkhole of its kind. Situated near the center of the Lighthouse Reef, the sinkhole provides divers with an electrifying journey through striking limestone formations, while in the company of giant groupers, nurse and reef sharks, and many other species of stunning marine life.
